Woman and Child Escape Serious Injury After Alleged Reckless Overtaking Crash on Molynes Road

A woman and her young child are fortunate to be alive after a violent two-vehicle collision on Molynes Road in St. Andrew, an incident that has reignited concerns about dangerous overtaking and reckless driving on one of Kingston’s busiest roadways.

The crash, which occurred during heavy traffic, reportedly unfolded when the driver of a black vehicle attempted to overtake a long line of slow-moving vehicles. Witnesses at the scene claimed the motorist crossed into the path of oncoming traffic, leaving little to no time for the approaching blue Honda Fit Hybrid carrying a woman and her child to avoid the collision.

The impact was devastating.

Photos taken shortly after the crash show both vehicles with catastrophic front-end damage. The blue Honda Fit sustained severe destruction to its driver’s side front corner, with the wheel ripped apart, airbags fully deployed, and the driver’s door heavily crushed. The black vehicle also suffered extensive front-end damage, including a shattered windshield and a collapsed front suspension, leaving debris scattered across the roadway.

Despite the force of the collision, the woman and her child reportedly survived the crash. Images from the scene show concerned residents surrounding the mother shortly after the incident, while another photograph carried the message: “Thank God she and her baby alive.”

Witnesses expressed relief that what could have easily become a fatal crash instead ended without the loss of life.

The alleged driver responsible for the overtaking maneuver was photographed sitting on a nearby wall following the collision as emergency responders and bystanders dealt with the aftermath. While several social media posts have labelled him a “careless driver,” authorities have not yet publicly released the findings of their investigation or announced whether any charges will be laid.

The collision caused significant traffic delays along Molynes Road as damaged vehicles were removed from the scene by tow trucks.

Road safety advocates have long warned that dangerous overtaking remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes in Jamaica. Attempting to pass long lines of traffic, especially on busy urban roads where visibility is limited and vehicles can emerge unexpectedly, dramatically increases the risk of head-on collisions.

For the family involved, the outcome could have been far worse. The deployment of the vehicle’s airbags and modern safety features may have played a crucial role in protecting the occupants from life-threatening injuries.

As police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, many Jamaicans are once again calling for motorists to exercise greater patience behind the wheel. A few minutes saved by reckless overtaking can quickly turn into a lifetime of regret.

Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of the collision and whether any traffic offences were committed. Until then, the incident serves as another sobering reminder that one dangerous decision on the road can place countless innocent lives at risk.
